Take a closer look at this no-cost resource. It’s called Benchmarking and lives on the ENERGY STAR® website under Portfolio Manager®

You can enter your building energy, water and waste data to see how you compare with other like properties.

California Assembly Bill 802 requires that commercial buildings over 50,000 square feet submit annual whole-building energy data. Local municipalities are also following suit.

It is very revealing and became a fun challenge for me to see how I could improve our building efficiency. Once the building specifics are entered, you can track your energy and water use along with your waste stream.

Energy metrics are scored from 1 – 100. I used it when I worked as the Construction and Facilities Manager in the corporate office of a San Diego based retailer. After loading the data in Portfolio Manager®, I was disappointed with the Benchmark score of 59. Then, in just over a year, I got the score to a rewarding 92.

By the way, big bonus, there is no cost to use Portfolio Manager®.

Do you want to know how I increased my score? It was thanks to my Benchmarking Coach, Rebecca Baptiste with the Center for Sustainable Energy®
